Energy saving lights down-under
As the first country in the world, AUSTRALIA will be lit up only by energy-saving lights from 2009. Traditional light bulbs will be banned from then onwards . The measure reduces electricity consumption by 70% for the same amount of light and will save 800,000 tonne of CO2 emissions per year. Man-made carbon emissions in Australia are among the highest per person in the world after the USA and western Europe. It seems that climate change will feature highly in the forthcoming elections later this year. The country suffers badly from serious drought.
